Plush Tiger Facts

There are some beautiful wild cats in the world but none are quite as lovely as the tiger. Luckily, so as to ensure as much realism as possible, many toy manufactures have taken great care in creating plush tigers. Despite that, when choosing a plush tiger, the same care should be taken as when picking a teddy bear: its facial features are the key to which one you will ultimately choose.

The news about the Siberian tiger population in Russia, is not very promising. In 2009, the WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) announced that whatever remaining Siberian tigers were left, had drastically declined in population due to an increase in poaching and loss of their habitat. This report is essential in letting Russian officials know what they need to do to go on to protect whatever populations remain.

A recent tiger survey that had been conducted by the Siberian Tiger Monitoring Program in coordination with the WCS and several governmental and non-governmental agencies, discovered in a main portion of the tigers range, that over a 12-year average there had been a 40 percent decline in their numbers. Survey of Siberian tigers are conducted on a yearly basis at 16 different monitoring sites totalling 9,000 square miles. These locations make up 15-18 percent of tiger habitats in Russia. In the end, just 56 tigers in total were counted at the 16 sites. There is speculation that due to the overwhelming amount of snow that fell in the area in 2008, because it was so deep, it may have forced tigers to cut down on the amount they travelled thus making them not as detectable. However, the same report also made reference to the fact that there had been an already 4-year trend of decreased numbers of tigers.

In 2005, an estimated 500 Siberian tigers could be found across their range, up from less than a total of 40 animals in the 1940s. The current state of the Siberian tiger population is further evidence that conservation efforts are not working as they should and protection of these tigers is not going far enough. Dr. Dale Miquelle from the Wildlife Conservation Society's Russian Far East Program, is a firm believer that the trend of declining Siberian tiger populations can in fact be reversed if action is taken immediately. Both Russian scientists and non-governmental agencies have recommended that changes take place in law enforcement regulations along with more significant changes to improve habitat protection. In addition, they would like to see the protected areas network improve their strength in helping to reverse the current population decline.
